120hz speeding up game's natural flow?

Hey guys, this is the first time I've ever dipped into 120hz so bear with my newness here. I just got a Viewsonic VX2268WM 120hz monitor and I'll start by saying this could be the single greatest thing I've ever done. I can't believe how much of a difference it's made on how smooth games are with higher framerates. It's simply stunning.

One thing I've noticed however that I'm sure is normal but just wanted to check. I haven't tested a whole lot of games but I've noticed in fallout 3 everything is happening twice as fast now. Player is running twice as fast, guns are shooting twice as fast, etc. It's a shock to the system almost after logging so many hours on this game and getting used to it. It almost seems unnatural how fast everything is. Is this normal? I just assumed 120hz would result in twice the framerates visually, but didn't think it would actually speed up how fast everything happens gameplay wise.

Hey Scooby24, IMO, 120Hz will not speed up the flow/pace of the game or movie... If anything, it would be better viewing experience (like clarity with fast motions, and less of the eyes strains)... with the increased of monitor refresh rate compared to the ones with 60Hz.

Well actually the faster the FPS the slower the game will seem. But it will be considerably more fluid and clear.
Same concept in your eyes. Your eyes capture more information when adrenaline is running through your body to give you a "Slowed" down vision. Pretty neat stuff. Same concept in Slow motion cameras except the effect is exaggerated by capturing in 200-1000 fps and playing back at a much slower FPS.

Increasing the refresh rate does NOT increase the framerate!! You have to already have over 60fps to notice a difference in displayed frames. Once a game is "playable" you'll notice no difference in speed.

If everything is literally twice as fast in Fallout 3 something is wrong.

I know, I was stating how higher frames would make it feel like the game is faster due to him having a 120hz monitor.

Wait is this 3D or 120hz your talking about? 120hz doesn't have that effect..

Fallout 3 for some reason ties the game speed into the framerate.

I take it you did this tweak so there wasn't a massive amount of mouse lag like tehre was for me:

Im also curious to what you are getting.. Mine was solid 60FPS (everything max 1920x1080) with my SLI rig... went down to 50-60 during VATS.
or, what happened is that because of that setting, it glitches w/ the native refresh rate is set to 120, rather than 60.

if you can stand the mouselag I might recommend turning ipresentinterval off, then turning vsync on for the game.

The game isn't supposed to go faster, contrary to what a lot are saying. FPS is how many updates per second. If your FPS is really low, then a gun will just fire more than one bullet per frame, you'll move more distance in one frame, etc.

It's not supposed to be twice as fast. It may be a bug, since most games do only run a loop that restarts on every frame. You can make most (all) software run x times faster by adjusting its clock with software like Cheat Engine. This literally makes the game's clock run faster, so an ingame second passes faster than a real life second, and everything runs faster.

okay it's fixed. I changed the iFPSClamp=0 setting to 120 and now the physics are the right speed.

I read that if the FPS's drop below 120, though the physics should slow down. Granted it's hard to get my system to drop below 120 in this game, but there was one spot where it was going about 90 and physics seemed to be the same speed there too, so I think this is a good permanent fix for 120hz people.

Well, it obviously has to do with the refresh rate. Its not caused by the monitor, but it is a bug that only occurs at 120Hz refresh.

Good to hear you got a fix, and double points for posting it so others can find it.

Well I forgot to update, I finally found a spot where FPS's dropped down to 60. The physics are tied to the FPS because with that setting at 120hz, it reversed the issue. At 60 fps the game was in slow motion.

I logged an issue with bethseda and I got back a response. After going back and forth the last e-mail I got said "I apologize, but this game is not supported on Windows 7"

How convenient.
