Default Video Card Guide

Are you currently having a video card dilemma? Whether your upgrading from a old card or deciding which card to put in a new rig, hopefully this guide will help make your decision

1.- How much money will you spend? The best choices for the amount you are willing to spend are listed below:

Under $50
Fx 5200 or 9200 ( 5200 is better though)
Stay away from an MX

$50-$100
Ti series ( 4600-4800SE)
9600, 9600Se, even a 5700LE or 5600. ( 5500 isnt too bad either but its ancient)

$100-$160
9700PRO ( used on ebay)
9800 Vanilla ( stay away from the SE)
9600XT, even a 9600 PRO
6200 (to my knowledge, its like a updated 5900XT)

$160-$225
6600GT (currently very good performance and the card with the most power before top-of-line category, bang for buck, and performance only a few frames away from the 6800. Its right on top of the x800SE as well. Be advised, if you run at resolutions 1600 or above, you need a 256MB card)
9800PRO ( Most of them softmod to a 9800XT) but make sure you have a VGA silencer for cooling. Also old, but was like a x800XT 2 years ago, a very good card too.
5900XT is a waste of $ and not all softmod to a 5950, however, if you can find a 5900 for under $225 (used) they have a higher chance of softmodding than the 5900XT. 5700Ultra is a waste of $ and not good at all for today's games.

$250-$300
6800 Vanilla (a drop faster than a 6600GT currently)
6800LE (if you want to unlock, get the Chaintech cause they unlock easier but no guareentees) The 6800LE is also tied with the 6600GT but the 6600GT might be a frame faster. Please note that the 6800LE has 8 PIPELINES, NOT 12. The 6800 Vanilla has 12.

$300-$400
x850 Pro when the price drops a little
x800 pro
6800GT (Nvidia has fixed the video processor problem on the newer ones)

$400-$500
6800ULTRA, x800XT ( Pe is just a little oc'd)

IF you currently have a 5900XT or below and considering a 6600GT, go for it, but if you have a 5900ULTRA or 5950 Ultra, you wont see TOO Much of a difference.
If you currently have a 9800PRO, you are fine for another year and a half (about) and you don't need to upgrade. However, if you must, not any lower than a x800PRO.
9700-9600- a 6600GT or 6800 Vanilla will give you a big difference, however, from a 9700PRO wont be too much unless you go for a 6800 Vanilla
9200- upgrading even to a 9700PRO you will see a HUGE difference, even a 9600XT)
5200- 6600GT, 6800LE, 9800 Vanilla will also give you a huge jump

Good luck on your final decision.

Thumbs up

This is a nice resource! Comes in handy now, I was actualy looking at a 5900XT, but have changed my mind. Maybe I'll see what Newegg has in the way of 5950 Ultras...

dont get 5950. Get the 6600GT. 5950 isnt a bad card but the image quality is horrible and the 6600GT is a lot better image quality and better performing for over $160 saved.

Yea, it'd be nice if someone with the knowledge would do this again.... it's a little out dated.

I saw a 5900XT for $50 local. If anybody wants it I'll try to contact the seller.
