Default NEW!! :How to Mod a Moniter

First Things first I am Matt but most people here call me The Dark Inquisitor. Yesterday i completed a one day moniter mod that still needs a little paint and some work on holding up the window (duct tape).

WARNING: this mod can kill !! moniters have enough stored power to kill someone easily. i can not accept any responsiblilty if you are injured or killed.

I really did not mess with the insides and made sure i kept away from them. but if you feel the need you can take it to a professional and get it grounded ( tv repairs i hear do that ). to drain a little power unplug the moniter while it is still on it wont be grounded but not at full power but still killable.

What you will need to turn that beige beast into a machine :

cans of spraypaint pending on coats and color you choose
two 80mm fans and cold cathodes and fan grills
( i used these little cathodes that went to usb) ( compusa)
one moniter ( mine was 17 or a 19 cant remember)
one cut of plexiglass or lexant about 14x11
ruler , painting tape , sharpie
1 Dremel with cutting wheels , sanders, and drillbits
perhaps molex extentions

Step 1: unscrew the case. you will need to have it allready unplugged and i would wait a couple days for safty. or be a dare devil like me and jump in after an hour. ( God loves me) . when you pull the case off make sure not to touch anything inside the case . now you have a cover and some guts

Step 2: You must choose betweenPainting or cutting. I chose to cut so i could cover up any mistakes with the paint. if you are painting skip to the painting step and then jump back here.

Step 3: measuring the cuts-
if you look at the top of the moniter you should see little holes, my mointer was very flat on the top which made this very easy to install the window. measure the vents till they end my top looked something like this

[sorry that i didnt take this pic when i was modding the first time can you settle for this?]

that should make a nice little square/rectagle ( dont be afraid to use the imagination)

now you need a fan stencil i used my glass off my computer window. put down some glass tape or maskingtape then mark it off. dont forget the screw holes . do one fan on each side of the mointer i did mine about 3 in away from the back about here:

NEW: if you have seen those stretchy exercize things that you pull on and stuff this is a good use for it. i found it was hollow so i cut it and uhhh made my fan edges look nice

cut a small square in an empty space near the video-in to put the fan wires thru

Step 4: Dremel time ( i used reinforced wheels)
now that you have everything marked off get out that dremel and those Mad Doctor eye goggles. begin with the top.
cut the outer rim of it but leave 1 row of nubs around the outer part of the area being cut.

LEAVE ROOM FOR GLASS INSIDE. you have to screw it in or tape or what every but besure to have suffice space to drill or what ever ( in. or 1/2 in perimiter)

dont be alarmed if there is a bad smell a little smoke, or melting of the plastic slightly. when your done you may need a little force to get the piece out ( punch) when ur top cutting is done put on the sanding bit. now sand off all the nubs to the end of the vents so you see no more top vents. it wont be perfect but pretty good.

Fans
now some skill takes place. take the cutting wheel and try to get the cut pretty close but cut short and sand like we did the top part to get a better cut. for the screws use judgement on size i think i used a 7/64 bit but dont take my word in stone. anyway i still had to move it in a circle to make it bigger. now ur all WOW this is looking good! check your fan holes and circle to make sure the fans fit

now measure your top again to get the measurement again. dont forget the extra 1in or half that is needed for drilling or taping. now go to the glass and measure the right size. then masking or glass tape where u want it then sharpie the lines you will follow with the dremel. allways cut larger never shorter for glass. when your done go check to see if it fits if not trim accordingly. dont secure the glass in yet!

Step 5: The Paint
first things first tape everything shut: the window, fans, other vents and the accual visual moniter. and put everything together. you should have a moniter with taped holes everywhere it is all closed. now get out your desired spraypaint and start painting. ( remember thin coats)put on a caot then wait to fully dry then another untill satisfied.

Step 6 :
puting it all together
now you should have a fully painted moniter that is totally dry and ready for the accessories... first the top window here you have a variety of options : hotglue. superglue. ductape. double sided foam tape (works good) or screws and bolts (GREAT). this part is simple use what you need and get the glass pretty flush on the top of the moniter ( if u dont like ur top cut put on some uv wire ribbon stuff and cover it up) now when that is done get ur fans and grills, apply them in the area you chose. now your cathode(s) the cathode is really optional because i found led fans give off alot of light. new: the leds give enough off unless you decided to paint the inner chasis (ME) now i have to find some more cus i used them for my ps2 which lookes nice. MAKE SURE NOTHING TOUCHES THE INTERNAL MONITER!

Step 7: Wireing
you need to tape the wires to the wall of the moniter and lead them out the little hole we made near the video out. now you need to run a power molex from your computer in an open pci slot out to the moniter (extention cables may be needed)just plugg it up anyway you can to get power to those fans. put it all together now. now boot it all up and see if you run!

Step 8: Pat yourself on the back and say a small prayer thanking God you didnt die. ( sorry if anyone did) BECAUSE NOW YOU HAVE A KICK ASS MONITER MOD!!!!!!

extra work: if you know how to install a 3 fan baybus cut a hole to put it in and install it on the top of the moniter to control those fans it will make it look insane too!! ( i'm not there yet my self ) and also if you know anything about leds cut a peice of glass to fit under the foot of moniter. drill some holes and pop those leds in for a awsome effect!!( i'm doing this when i get a new case cause i got some in it

REP ME if My guide helped you or if you like it

gimme some replies and feel free to ask any questions or correct any mistakes.

-Later-
PICTURES ARE HERE
-note : i did find a spare psu and it is the best thing i have ever used
since it is a old 250 psu from a p1 overddrived edition the switch accually turns it off ( not the switch on the back cus there is none) i am talking about a power button switch that would be in front of the pc!!!yaaye

so i stuck in into an old videogame box holder and cut it up and now i have a nice set up with a button to turn off those loud, bright fans.

update: the plexi is glued

could you mount a sff psu inside of the moniter, so you don't
have to string the fan wires all the case?
