Default Lapping Guide

UPDATED 1/19/05

-Move down to reach the lapping heatsink section.

This is the art of lapping your NorthBridge(I'll refer to it as NB, from now on) Lapping the NB creates a better area for contact between the NB Heatsink (NBHSF) The words on the NB prior to lapping are a very bumpy ride for the heatsink.

(This can be done on a multiple of motherboards)

Please NOTE: I am not responsible for damages caused by stupidity. I did this and it worked, therefore it should work for you.

Just look at the poor motherboard... we're gonna rip it out of your case, and sand the living crap out of it. (Take it out of the case nicely)
========================

========================
Set yourself up a nice work area, that is 1. FLAT, and 2.CLEAN
========================

========================
First things first, flip your motherboard over to see two small white pegs. You need to use your fingernails to get it done.
========================

========================
Pinch those pegs and push up towards the motherboard to pop them out. (If you can't do this, I suggest grabbing a little kid off the street and make him do it. Or just get someone else in your family to do it. I don't suggest using tools.)
========================

========================
Now take the NBHSF off the motherboard, you might need some stregnth because that white goo is horrible to get off. Unplug the fan and move it off to the side for now.
========================

========================
Now get some isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol, and get some on a paper towel or dry rag, and start rubbing the goo off.
========================

========================
I don't know what is exactly in your area, but I went to home depot to get 400 grit sand paper. (If you are overly cautious get some 800 grit, and put electrical tape around the NB.
========================

========================
Now get a small flat object to be your sanding block and wrap the sandpaper around the object like so...
========================

========================
Now start sanding in figure 8's, and if you don't have alot of space, do a full circle around the NB, getting every part evenly.
========================

========================
And when you think your done sanding, look at the picture below, and see if it matches
========================

========================
Now, I suggest a new NBHSF, and there is a great one, that I suggest getting. Thermalright's NB1c can be found a Newegg for around 20 bucks USD. I just shoved an old DFi heatsink on there. Put AS5 on the NB and spread it around evenly.
========================

========================
And if you look at it from the top it looks like a beauty! Test your new lapped NB!
========================

========================

ADDED 1/19/05
Lapping your NBHSF/CPUHSF
========================

I did this in like... 5 min, since I don't feel like using tarnish remover (smells bad!!!), its gonna be kinda... scratchy.

First, grab your heatsinks, you'll notice I've done this before. (crappily might I add)
========================

========================
Get your 400 grit sandpaper, and make a sanding block
========================

========================
Sand in a figure 8 motion and continue until you are satisfied... About 2-3 minutes of contiunous sanding should suffice. Then using your rubbing/isopropyl alcohol, wipe it clean (Optional: To make it super shiny, grab some tarnish remover, it should work with aluminum and copper, and start rubbing)
========================

========================
You'll notice I didnt use tarnish remover...
========================

========================
Now do the same motion and steps for the NBHSF as above. Use alcohol to clean, and use tarnish remover if you feel you need to.
========================

========================
Look at the shiny! Just not reflective... I might update pics when I use tarnish remover.
========================

========================

nicely done, although ive never found a cause to lap my NB, all the NBs ive check have always been nice and flat the back of the NB HSF though has always worried me, most stock NB HSFs have always been poorly machine made and had lines in them the size of the grand canyon its a shame really it wouldnt cost manufacturers anything to improve their NB HSFsmanufacturing process a bit.
